April 2012

Hello Walnut Acres Parents,

I have much information to share and I am trying to reduce the length of my messages...So here's what's happening in our world today...

If you volunteer at Walnut Acres in any way during the year, please let us celebrate YOU!  Mark the date of June 6, 2012, on your calendar. Between 12:15-1:00 p.m. school staff would like to extend a small token of our thanks to you for all of your hard work and dedication.  Come join us in the school courtyard.

We are continuing our well-received CAP workshops and the students are responding very positively to the experience. Please take the time to ask your child about what he or she learned in the workshop and reinforce that learning at home.  Since I'm on the subject of safety, our security cameras have been installed and are in the process of being activated. Our focus in placing the cameras is to put "eyes on" the perimeter of our school as well as the playground, and then to protect the computer lab. Huge thanks go to Mr. Jeff Smith, dad and security expert, who walked the site with me several times to optimize the camera placement plan.

STAR testing will take place between 5/7-5/21. As always, our mantra to our children needs to be, "Do your best and forget the rest."  If you have a child who gets anxious about testing, share with your child that the assessment is really designed to measure the progress of our school, and call me if I can be of assistance.

The Innovation Committee, 21st Century staff and parent leaders at Walnut Acres, has developed and submitted a proposal to the district to make Walnut Acres a 21st Century pilot school. As such, we are asking for improved networking access now (rather than later) through Measure C funds, and exclusion from some technology/internet district regulations. While we await response to our request, we are surveying 3rd and 4th grade parents to gather information about interest in a 1:1 device option for 4th and 5th graders during the 2012-13 school year. 1:1 means one electronic device (laptop or tablet) for each child. If you are a parent of a 3rd or 4th grade student, your input is requested before we complete any further research on 1:1 device programs.  The surveys are due back to your child's teacher by April 27th.

There is one other form coming your way today in the Communication Folder.  Please complete the "Return Status" form ONLY IF you will NOT be returning to Walnut Acres so that we can configure classes for next year as accurately as possible. If your plans change at a later date, we would appreciate that you keep us posted.

And speaking of planning for the new year, if you would like to offer input about placement needs of your child for the 2012-13 school year, please complete the "green sheet" that can be picked up in the school office starting today, April 23rd. This opportunity is provided so that you can give the staff information about your child's learning needs. These forms are available through May 21st.

As I sign off for this month I want to extend my personal Mother's Day wishes and congratulations to Walnut Acres moms and to those of you who take on the role of moms! I also thank you, because the love you have for your children touches our school community to enhance it every day.

As Art Urban writes,

"A mother's love is like a circle, it has no beginning and no ending.

It keeps going around and around ever expanding, touching everyone who comes in contact with it, engulfing them like the morning's mist, warming them like a blanket of evening stars.

A mother's love is like a circle, it has no beginning and no ending."

Happy Mother's Day! With respect, but no less length - sorry.

Colleen
