 Walnut Acres Fundraising Event - February 7th at Round Table Clubhouse

This Wednesday, February 7th, the  Round Table Clubhouse on Treat   Blvd. in Concord will host a Walnut Acres Day from 11 am to 9 pm. If   you share that you are from Walnut Acres Elementary, 25% of your   purchase will go directly to the Walnut Acres Parent Faculty Club.

Walnut Acres Art Show 2018- March 15th

Attention all artists! It's time to get ready for the annual Art Show happening on Thursday, March 15th when the MUR will be transformed into a Museum of Modern Art featuring masterpieces by our own Walnut Acres students. To learn more about this event and to enter your student, check out Art Show on the PFC website.
The deadline to enter is March 1st.

5th Grade Families! The Deadline to put an Ad in the 2018 Yearbook is EXTENDED to February 28.

Do you want to put a special message for your 5th Grader in the yearbook? Information on how to purchase and submit your personal ad can be found on the Yearbook page of the PFC website at http://www.walnutacrespfc. net/yearbook.  Create and pay for your ad no later than February 28.  
Order your Yearbook by April 15th!  Yearbooks are $30 dollars. They can only be purchased online this year. Please visit the yearbook page on the PFC website for information on how to order your book. Don't miss out on the memories!

Drive Thru Sign Ups by Grade Level
Thank you to the 1st Grade parents who stepped up to open doors and greet our students at the Drive Thru during the month of January. Each month, a different class level is responsible for helping at the Drive Thru. February is the 5th Grade parents' turn, and March is the 4th grade parents turn!

We need 4 parents per day, Monday - Thursday. Fridays will continue to be Father Fridays with our awesome dads greeting the kids in the morning. 2018 Walnut Acres Science Fair Wrap Up!

Last Thursday, volunteer judges spent the morning meeting students and learning about their Science Fair projects.

Student projects covered a wide variety of topics, from bath bombs to volcanoes to crayfish. The judges were impressed by the hard work and dedication shown by our students. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, as well as honorable mentions were announced to the school, and you can view the winners on thePFC Science Fair web page. Great job to all! Thank you to all who made this such a successful event, especially the volunteers who helped with set up, break down, judging and general logistics.

Girls on the Run - Walnut Acres Field
Tuesdays 4:00 - 5:15pm ; Saturdays 9:45 - 11:00am
Grades 3-5
February 27-May 12th 

At Girls on the Run, we believe that every girl can embrace who she is, can define who she wants to be, and can change the world. Girls in grades 3rd-5th, come have fun with us and take part in games that help you feel positive and good! This is NOT a competitive running program; it is a celebration of doing things you never thought you could. Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. 

Join us each Tuesday and Saturday to move, jump, have fun and celebrate yourself! The 10-week session includes healthy snacks at each lesson, a t-shirt, a water bottle and entry to the end of season Girls on the Run 5K on Sunday, May 6th in San Francisco.

The 2018 Science Fair is Next Week!

Thank you for encouraging our young enthusiastic scientists to participate in one of Walnut Acres' favorite events, the Annual Science Fair! We have over 100 registrations and we are eagerly looking forward to meeting and learning from these young scientists.

The PEAK Education Foundation is a non-profit education foundation dedicated to the Northgate area with the purpose of raising funds to benefit Northgate schools and students. A member of each school community attends monthly meetings and acts as a liaison between the foundation and the school. If you are interested in learning more about PEAK and want to be involved in their efforts, this is a great way to help both our school and PEAK. Join this year's Science Fair crew to learn the ins and outs of running the fair. We will need some new leadership next year and this is a great way to get in and see what it's all about. Lost and Found! 

We're only 2 weeks into the new year, but the Lost and Found bin is full already! Please have your student check for their coats and sweatshirts. There are lots of items there that they probably want to wear in this cold weather!

Boy Scouts Troop 810 Open House- Tuesday, January 23rd! 

Boy Scouts Troop 810 invites all interested 5th graders and their parents to attend our Open House on Tuesday, January 23 from 7:30 - 8:30 pm.  The Open House will take place at Foothill Middle School  at 2775 Cedro Lane, Walnut Creek. Our scouts will be showing you how to put up a tent that stays up, how to pack a backpack and not make it so heavy you can't carry it up a mountain, and how to tie knots. Games and snacks will also be provided.  Come learn about the many things Troop 810 has to offer - monthly overnight camping trips, ziplining, snow camping, canoeing, just to name a few. This year we will be going to Emerald Bay and Wolfeboro for our summer camps.

Troop 810 is a boy led troop that values and promotes leadership development, community service, scout skills, fun and adventure. We were established in 1966 and have over 150 Eagle Scouts. Watch the Movie Angst at St. Matthew Church, January 24th

Saint Matthew Church is hosting a FREE community-wide screening of the movie Angst to raise awareness around Anxiety. The movie features candid interviews with teens about anxiety, tools that help and hope. The screening is appropriate for children 10 and up. It’s produced by the same people that brought us Screenagers

Each year Mt. Diablo seeks input from parents in order to evaluate relationships among students, parents, and school staff. The data isused at the district level to assess needs, so your input matters! Results will also be reviewed by Walnut Acres staff, School Site Council, and our Safety Committee as we analyze our successes and challenges leading to next year’s goals.

By this Friday,  please go to the California School Parent Survey to complete the anonymous 15-minute survey. You are welcome to request a pencil-paper copy of the survey from the office if you prefer. 

However you choose to participate, we encourage you to complete the survey so that the data we collect will include YOUR PERSPECTIVE!

Got Aluminum Cans and Plastic Bottles?

NEXT WEEK, January 16-19th, at morning drop-off, we are collecting CRV-labeled aluminum cans and plastic bottles. No need to get out of your car - just hand us the bag (or open your trunk for us) as you go through the drive thru!

Every first week of the month, we will collect CRV beverage containers (please, no glass) from you as you drop your child off at school. Recycled materials will be exchanged for cash at a recycling center and the proceeds will be used for playground supplies, and for Walnut Acres Recycling Club supplies and activities.

Science Fair Volunteers Needed

Join the Walnut Acres students as they embark on a fun scientific adventure!  We need parent volunteers to help with set-up, check-in of projects, judging, and clean-up. 

Our greatest need is for volunteers to judge the projects. All it involves is talking to the students about their projects and asking a few questions from a prepared score sheet. It's lots of fun and exciting to see the projects and the pride that the students take in their work. No prior judging experience is required. A brief training and score sheets will be provided. We especially need parents with children in younger grades who are able to judge 4th or 5th grade projects. No experience necessary. Sign up here to volunteer!

Save Walnut Acres Wine Walk

We need hosts for 2018! Help us keep this tradition going. Walnut Acres parents look forward to the annual wine walk event to break in the new school year.  Meet new parents and visit with old friends, and help raise funds for auction at the same time! We are still looking for hosts for Kid Buy-In Parties to be sold at the Auction. We are especially in need of hosts for 1st and 4th grade (1 party needed for each) and 3rd grade (2 parties needed). These parties are a great way to get involved and help raise much-needed funds for many of the wonderful extra programs offered at Walnut Acres Elementary. Moreover, they are lots of FUN for the kids and the hosts!! Some potential party theme ideas are: sports, swim, movie, crafts, picnic, scavenger hunt, or an art party. Please consider hosting a Kid Buy-In Party. Watch the Movie Angst at St. Matthew Church, January 24th

Saint Matthew Church is hosting a FREE community-wide screening of the movie Angst to raise awareness around Anxiety. The movie features candid interviews with teens about anxiety, tools that help and hope. The screening is appropriate for children 10 and up. It’s produced by the same people that brought us Screenagers

Boy Scouts Troop 810 Open House

Boy Scouts Troop 810 invites all interested 5th graders and their parents to attend our Open House on Tuesday, January 23 from 7:30 - 8:30 pm.  The Open House will take place at Foothill Middle School  at 2775 Cedro Lane, Walnut Creek. Our scouts will be showing you how to put up a tent that stays up, how to pack a backpack and not make it so heavy you can't carry it up a mountain, and how to tie knots. Games and snacks will also be provided.  Come learn about the many things Troop 810 has to offer - monthly overnight camping trips, ziplining, snow camping, canoeing, just to name a few. This year we will be going to Emerald Bay and Wolfeboro for our summer camps.

Troop 810 is a boy led troop that values and promotes leadership development, community service, scout skills, fun and adventure. We were established in 1966 and have over 150 Eagle Scouts. Read-A-Thon Wrap Up

The numbers are still rolling in but we can tell you that every ninja reader rocked the Read-A-Thon this year! Thank you for your participation and support of your student, we couldn't have done it without you. 

The question on everybody's mind is.... now that the reading and fundraising is complete, when are prizes being distributed? The Read-A-Thon team is planning to hand out prizes to students THIS WEEK once all of the numbers have been logged and totaled. Annual Toy and Clothing Drive - DRIVERS NEEDED Friday Dec. 15th

 A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to this year’s Toy and Clothing Drive benefitting Shore Acres Elementary School. It has been a huge success with more than two carloads of donations picked up each day! 

We are still looking for volunteers help transport the donations to Shore Acres Elementary School in Bay Point. Donations collected last week are being sorted and will be ready for delivery on Friday, December 15th.  Vehicles will load up at 1:30pm and caravan to Shore AcresMinivans or SUVs are preferred, but any size vehicle is welcome!

If you can help deliver donations, please sign up on Konstella. Bring your children and their friends with you so that they can share in the experience. Students from Shore Acres will be there to help, too. If you have any questions, please email communityservice@walnutacrespfc.net

Math Kangaroo Competition - Sign up by December 15th
This year, for the first time, Walnut Acres is participating in the 23rd Annual International Math Kangaroo Competitionfor students in 1st-12th grades. Math Kangaroo's goal is to encourage students to learn mathematics by presenting them with problems that are interesting and by rewarding their efforts.

The competition will take place on Thursday, March 15, 2018, but sign ups are happening now. You may register online by December 15, and the fee is $20.  All registered participants will be invited to practice their math problem-solving skills with parent volunteer leaders over the next few months, in preparation for this written, strategy-based math contest. Drive Thru Sign Ups by Grade Level!
Thank you to the 3rd Grade parents who have stepped up to open doors and greet our students at the Drive Thru during the month of November. December is the 2nd Grade parents' turn! Each month, a different class level is responsible for helping at the Drive Thru.

Each year Mt. Diablo seeks input from parents in order to evaluate relationships among students, parents, and school staff. The data isused at the district level to assess needs, so your input matters! Results will also be reviewed by Walnut Acres staff, School Site Council, and our Safety Committee as we analyze our successes and challenges leading to next year’s goals.

Between now and December 31, go to the California School Parent Survey to complete the anonymous 15-minute survey. You are welcome to request a pencil-paper copy of the survey from the office if you prefer. Or, we will have the Co-Lab (B-6) open during parent conferences so that you may complete the survey before or after your parent conference. 

However you choose to participate, we encourage you to complete the survey so that the data we collect will include YOUR PERSPECTIVE!

The 2018 Science Fair is coming on Thursday, February 1!   

Professor Whizbang visited your child’s classroom on Friday, December 8th to get them excited about science. Ask them about the experiments he performed and encourage them to participate in this year’s fair.

Winter break is a great time to brainstorm ideas and get started on your project. Project ideas are unlimited - whatever interests your child! The deadline for submitting entry forms is Wednesday, January 10. Please submit project entry forms online.

We need volunteers! We especially need help judging 4th grade projects. No experience necessary. We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up the Science Fair on Wednesday, January 31 and break it down on Friday, February 2. Look out for a Konstella sign up.

With the holidays upon us, it is time for Walnut Acres to reach out to the larger community with our Annual Toy and Clothing Drive benefiting Shore Acres Elementary School. We will be accepting donations of gently used toys and clothing December 4th to 8th in front of the school office. All sizes and types of clothing (except undergarments) for infants to adults are requested as well as toys and books. We kindly ask that clothing be free of stains and tears. As a guide, donate only what you would be comfortable giving to a friend. 
We also need volunteers (adults and students) to assist in sorting, delivering and storing  donations. Please SIGN UP to help and check the Community Service Page of the PFC website for volunteer details.

 Got Aluminum Cans and Plastic Bottles?

NEXT WEEK, Dec. 4-8, at morning drop-off, we are collecting CRV-labeled aluminum cans and plastic bottles. No need to get out of your car - just hand us the bag (or open your trunk for us) as you go through the drive thru!

Every first week of the month, we will collect CRV beverage containers (please, no glass) from you as you drop your child off at school. Recycled materials will be exchanged for cash at a recycling center and the proceeds will be used for playground supplies, and for Walnut Acres Recycling Club supplies and activities.

Hour of Code: December 4-8
Did you know that every one of our students gets to participate in theFifth Annual Hour of Code Program? The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.
At Walnut Acres, our students have participated every year since Hour of Code began! This year, the Hour of Code will be held during the week of December 4-8. Verified volunteer parents are encouraged to help with their students' classes - sign ups were sent via Konstella to individual class levels on Monday.

25th Annual Turkey Trot - Just 3 Weeks Away!

 Thanksgiving Morning, Thursday, Nov. 23rd, 8am at Civic Park.

This family fun event, brought to you by Forma Gym, is a great way to start your Thanksgiving holiday and show support for your schools! There are several races to choose from including Kids Fun Runs, 10K Run, and 5K run or walk, festival areas and a costume contest!

Last year the Turkey Trot raised over $15,000 for PEAK Education Foundation schools, and this year we hope to raise even more by having lots of students and parents participate.
VOLUNTEERS are needed to help this event run smoothly. There are opportunities to pass out race materials in the days leading up to the race, as well as several different volunteer tasks on race day.  If you're available, please consider donating a few hours of your time.

Landscaping Help Needed for the Walnut Acres Recycle Club 

The Recycle Club’s big project this year is to create a permanent recycling/composting station outside the MUR stage doors. I am going to work with the recycle club members to create cement stepping stones to decorate the area. The area will need to be prepped and we will work with MDUSD to get approval of whatever design we come up with. I could use help with design and installation. I imagine we’ll need some stones to fill in around the Recycle Club paving stones. We will be using some of the money raised by parent Mike Jahnke’s recycling fundraiser to implement this project. If you can help in any way, please send me an email to mlce517@gmail.com. Thanks! Halloween at Walnut Acres

As is tradition at Walnut Acres, Halloween will be celebrated with a Costume Parade and a Sing Out on Halloween Day. Students are invited to wear a costume, but please no masks or weapons. Your child's teacher will send home further details about what is happening in your child's classroom. Here is the tentative schedule for the morning:

Calling all agents: We need additional volunteers to help secure exciting bid items that raise money for our kids! If you can spare a couple hours before November 15, please sign up on Konstella to call or visit local business, and remind them it’s time to donate to our Auction fundraiser. And if you or anyone you know is curious about donating directly, all the details and benefits of supporting our auction are online.

The Walnut Creek Police Department mails out a holiday card every December. This year, they are looking for art work from local elementary school students to grace the holiday card’s cover! If you would like your student’s art to be considered for the holiday card this year, please stop by the school office to pick up a flier. Artwork must be turned into the school office by October 13, 2017.

School Photos Update

The wonderful team at iClickSmiles is hard at work preparing student and class photos for viewing online. When they are ready, your student will receive a personalized notice with their individual online code and gallery password. These will come home with your kids by the end of this week, so please be on the lookout for them in your students' folders or binders.

We are currently looking for potential hosts for Buy-in Parties, many of which will be sold at the upcoming Auction in March 2018.  Specifically, we are looking for hosts for Kids Buy-in Parties, which are typically for a specific grade level, and Parent Buy-in Parties.

These parties are an essential part of Walnut Acres fundraising efforts. They are a FUN way to support our school and to get to know your child's classmates and other parents in the community! A single family can host a party, or a group of families can host together.

Walk & Roll to School Day is Wednesday, October 4th!

Wednesday, October 4th is Walnut Acres first Walk & Roll to School Day of the new school year. Be sure to WALK or ROLL to school so you can receive a participation prize! And, representatives from Street Smarts will be here to hand out helmets to students who NEED them.

Walk and Roll to School Day is extra special this year as we will be recognizing the completion of the Safe Routes to Schools construction around Walnut Acres and Foothill schools.  These improvements were accomplished by parents like you voicing their concerns and working with the City of Walnut Creek to make our daily routes to school much safer.  There will be a short ceremony at 8:20am in front of Foothill Middle School, with city council members, principals and community members.

Seeking Lunch Patrol Volunteers

Did you know that we depend on parent volunteers to help our students during lunchtime? Lunch Patrol volunteers assist at lunch and recess between 11:20 am and 1:00 pm. It's a great way to visit your kids and get to know their friends, all while helping out the school. If you are a first grade parent, we encourage you to sign up in September when our newest lunch buddies (the first graders) are getting used to doing lunch at school. They really love seeing mom or dad helping out! We request that each family volunteer for Lunch Patrol at least 3 times per school year. Please sign up on Konstella or email lunchpatrol@walnutacrespfc.net.

Volunteer Fingerprinting Information  

If you are new to our school and plan to volunteer in the classroom or on campus, we suggest you get fingerprinted as soon as possible. It's strongly suggested that you take care of this detail as soon as possible. If you wait, there will likely be a long wait list (and therefore a long delay) for the fingerprinting appointments.

Volunteers are a vital part of Walnut Acres, but only authorized volunteers are able to participate in classrooms and on campus. The MDUSD website outlines all the information you need. Click here: volunteer information.

Birthday Marquee

In case you missed this opportunity at the Ice Cream Social, we're opening the electronic marquee board for a fun way to contribute to your school while putting a smile on your child's face.  For a $25 donation, the greeting “Happy Birthday ‘Your Child’s Name’” will be on display from 7am-9pm on your date of choice. First class begins September 22nd
Enrollment for the Fall Enrichment Classes is now open and classes begin next week. Enrichment classes are held after school hours and are available on a first come/first serve basis for Walnut Acres students, grade K – 5. All registration is by mail directly to the class vendors.

Classes offered this Fall:

Tuesday: Mundo Espanol Spanish Enrichment (Grades K - 5)

Coming Soon: School Photos by iClickSmiles

We are excited to announce that iClickSmiles Photography will be taking Fall photos at Walnut Acres in two weeks!

Photos will be taken on: Monday September 25th

and Tuesday September 26th

There are no envelopes to fill out prior to photo day, and all students will be photographed for free. You will be able to view and order photos online about 10 days after pictures are taken. More details will be available next week.

After School Music Enrichment for 4th and 5th Graders
Begins Wednesday, September 27th
Attention 4th and 5th grade parents!  The After School Music Enrichment Program is open for enrollment. This is a great way for your kids to learn an instrument in a fun and low stress setting. Classes are on Wednesdays from 12:45-1:45, from September through June.  No prior experience is necessary. The first class is September 27 so get signed up soon to reserve your spot! Walk & Roll to School Day is Wednesday, October 4th!

Wednesday, October 4th is Walnut Acres first Walk & Roll to School Day of the new school year!  We will be celebrating National Walk to School Day that day, along with Foothill Middle School.  

WHY walk & roll? It's fun, healthy, reduces traffic, it's pollution-free, and it gives students responsibility and builds independence! Click here for event details and to find out where you can meet up with a Walk & Roll group  near you. And, don't forget to check in when you arrive at school to be counted and get a prize!  
Students are reminded to use Street Smarts to stay safe while biking, skateboarding, riding scooters and walking:
Always...

  • Wear helmets,
  • Ride on the right side of the road (go in the same direction as traffic),
  • Stop at red lights and stop signs,
  • Make eye contact with drivers,
  • When walking: Use crosswalks and Stop, Look, & Listen before crossing streets!

Parents are also reminded to use Street Smarts while driving in the 20 MPH school zone. Your children - and their classmates - are worth the extra time it takes to drive safely.

This year, we are trying something a little different at the Drive Thru. Each month, a different class level will be responsible for opening doors and greeting our students in the morning. We will begin in September with the 5th Grade parents, then the 4th Grade parents will help out in October. Click here for 5th Grade September sign ups and here for 4th Grade October sign ups. We need 4 parents per day, Monday - Thursday. Fridays will continue to be Father Fridays with our awesome dads greeting the kids in the morning. Please sign up now - it's a short commitment  - just 20 minutes from 7:40 - 8:00 am, but it makes a huge difference in getting our school days off to a good start!

Our live auction fundraiser is back this year with a fantastic James Bond theme, and now’s the time to get involved!

  • Money raised goes to support Walnut Acres Elementary programs for OUR KIDS!

Seeking Lunch Patrol Volunteers

Did you know that we depend on parent volunteers to help our students during lunchtime? Lunch Patrol volunteers assist at lunch and recess between 11:20 am and 1:00 pm. It's a great way to visit your kids and get to know their friends, all while helping out the school. If you are a first grade parent, we encourage you to sign up in September when our newest lunch buddies (the first graders) are getting used to doing lunch at school. They really love seeing mom or dad helping out! We request that each family volunteer for Lunch Patrol at least 3 times per school year. Please sign up on Konstella or email lunchpatrol@walnutacrespfc.net.

Box Tops for Education: Turn your Box Tops into $ for Walnut Acres!

Have you been saving your Box Tops throughout the summer? Bring them to the office (or send them in a ziploc bag with your student) and put them in the Box Tops container. Box Tops collected by Friday, September 15 will be turned in for the Fall Box Top collection.

Volunteer Fingerprinting Information  

If you are new to our school and plan to volunteer in the classroom or on campus, we suggest you get fingerprinted as soon as possible. It's strongly suggested that you take care of this detail as soon as possible. If you wait, there will likely be a long wait list (and therefore a long delay) for the fingerprinting appointments.

Volunteers are a vital part of Walnut Acres, but only authorized volunteers are able to participate in classrooms and on campus. The MDUSD website outlines all the information you need. Click here: volunteer information.
